Man Crush Monday: TV Writer Matthew Chauncey
This sexy, witty scribe has mastered the art of Insta fame.
What happens when you work behind the scenes in television, but also want--and deserve--to sell yourself in front of the camera? If you're Matthew Chauncey, an L.A.-based writer who currently works on the ABC series Agent Carter (a spinoff of the Captain America films that was just renewed for a second season), you turn to Instagram, and combine your wit, your aesthetic sensibilities, and, indeed, your good looks and "gym body" to garner a fan base that's akin to those of the famous folks you write for. In Chauncey's case, more than 10,400 Instagram followers.
"Working on such on a top-secret project, where security is tight and on-set photography is verboten, has proven particularly challenging," the 32-year-old says. "I've mostly made a name for myself chronicling my admittedly charmed life on Instagram, where I post pictures of my misadventures in Hollywood, usually without a shirt on. Sure, your average nerdy, genre geek isn't typically known for shirtless selfies, but you know the saying, 'Dress for the job you want.' Or in my case, don't get dressed at all." He quips, "I guess I'm not sure what this says about my professional ambitions."
Chauncey--who's also worked on shows like Dollhouse, Reaper, and Terra Nova, and triple-majored in journalism, economics, and legal studies at Northwestern--will stop you in your tracks, but he's not just another selfie-obsessed hottie. What makes his feed special is a curated mix of well-lit, dreamy SoCal shots, and captions that reveal him to be a well-balanced surveyor of high and low culture.
"My social media persona is intended to lampoon the desperate culture of over-sharing, vanity and shameless self-promotion...all while desperately over-sharing and vainly self-promoting," he says. "In the end, I hope people realize that I'm in on the joke. 'Besides,' I tell myself, 'I work in Hollywood. It's all about brand-building. My brand just happens to be attention.' "
Meanwhile, to give Chauncey the attention that he desires, follow him on Instagram @matthewchauncey, and on Twitter @OfficialChaunce.
