Freeheld Trailer Reminds Us How Far We’ve Come
The movie tells the true story of Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree.
In the first trailer for Freeheld, Julianne Moore plays a New Jersey detective with major Farrah Fawcett hair. The movie also stars Ellen Page as her lovestruck mechanic spouse and Steve Carrel as a "middle-class Jewish homosexual from New Jersey."
Freeheld tells the true story of Laurel Hester (Moore) and Stacie Andree (Page), domestic partners fighting to ensure that Stacie will receive Laurel's pension benefits after Laurel is diagnosed with lung cancer. It was adapted from the 2007 Oscar-winning documentary short of the same name.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, director Peter Sollett made it clear that this was a passion project for everyone involved.
"It's not often in the movies that we get to talk about our heroes. And to me, Laurel Hester is a hero," Sollett said. "I knew that as soon as I came to know her story."
Portraying events that took place between 2002 and 2006, the film reminds us how much progress has been made within the past decade. With a talented ensemble and a powerful true story, the tearjerker looks like nothing short of Oscar gold.
As Page told Out last year:
"It's very direct in showing how discrimination against the LGBT community affects people. There's no getting around the unfairness that happened here, and just how illogical and almost psychopathic it felt. And it's so exciting to get to do a love story with the sex that you actually fall for. I'm thrilled about it."
