Jordan Klepper gave those homophobic conservatives crying discriminationatory wolf over LGBTs getting equal rights the satirical ribbing they deserve in a segment from last night's The Daily Show.
The Eureka Springs, Arkansas city council quickly and quietly passed ordinance 2223 back in February, prohibiting the city and businesses from discriminating against an individual on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The council voted unanimously to pass 2223 before it could be blocked by the state legislature, which had previously banned cities from creating their own civil rights ordinances.
Local pastor Randall Christy has been trying to repeal the ordinance ever since, claiming that it discriminates against Christians -- except that it really doesn't.
"Nobody's taking away the church's right to do anything," sassy city council member Joyce Zeller told Klepper. "They are not a part of this ordinance. They are not included in this ordinance. It has nothing to do with churches."
Still, Christy has his own logic, or whatever you want to call insanity these days, but he's fighting a losing battle: Eureka Springs residents voted to uphold 2223 in May after the ordinance was put on the ballot.
