“Hey Ya” vs “Humpty,” and Effie weathers a storm.
After teases galore of the lip-sync showdown between Broad City creators Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, the mics have dropped and one woman stands amongst the debris.
The first round paired Jacobson's "Humpty Dance" against Glazer's "Hey Ya." As usual, the opening numbers were much more subdued than each woman's buzzed-about finale. But "Hey Ya," while iconic in its own right, can only reach max lip-syncing potential when you're in a group and you can throw the next verse to someone. There's a reason Andre 3000 needed an entire band composed of himself in the music video. Jacobson's "Humpty Dance" was the throwback the people deserved, and she delivered. As the entire internet knows by now, Jacobson's finale was "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," where she channeled the spirit of Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Holliday, and every other Jennifer in the world who can sing. The mark of a true lip-sync performer is one who is just as breathless at the end of their song as the real singer would be, and Jacobson was hitting those notes - probably. Glazer put up a formidable fight, and one that ultimately led the judges to crown her the winner with "It's Raining Men." She may have had the boots, raincoat, and backup dancers, but Jacobson has the internet.
