Busy day in the merciless world of female pop music. On top of Beyonce's Vogue cover leak and Lana Del Rey's explosive new video, R&B princess FKA Twigs has surprise-released her anticipated third EP, M3LL155X, a five-track opus which features three new songs.
The polymorth artist has also directed a short film based on the EP's first four tracks. She enlists Rick Owens's wife and muse Michele Lamy to make a cameo in the opening sequence, "Figure 8," which Twigs began performing this summer during her Congregata tour.
The next two tracks show real signs of growth. In "I'm Your Doll," Twigs is portrayed with the body of a sex doll, pinned onto a bed by an aggressive man who seems to be raping her. A vocal feminist, Twigs sends out a powerful, yet harrowing message on gender politics and sexual violence.
The next song, "In Time," has a more upbeat tempo, which gives Twigs the opportunity to shows off her dance skills when she's not busy pretending she's pregnant. This might be her catchiest track to date. It comes off as a warning sign that she's in the game for the long run, and asserts her triple threat status to her lackluster competition on the music scene.
The voguing-inspired "Glass & Patron," released as a teaser track last spring, closes the video, capturing Twigs's enduring mystique: M3LL155X may be her most accessible work to date, but her visual universe remains deeply unsettling, utterly polarizing, and beautifully weird.
