Finally!
After about a year of denial and evasion, Sam Smith has come out and confirmed that he is in fact singing the theme for Spectre, which will be the 24th Bond film.
Called "Writing on the Wall," the song will be released on September 25. It was recorded in January.
"This is one of the highlights of my career," Smith said. "I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations."
The news was announced this morning on BBC Radio 1. Smith told host Nick Grimshaw:
"I'm so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been top secret mission of my own. I got called into the office with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and they gave me the script, I read the script... they said 'have a go at the song.' It's the quickest I've ever written a song - it took 20 minutes... and they loved it! I love the song so much."
Top secret mission indeed. Just last week, Smith was still denying that he was on the project.
"That's not me. That's definitely not me," he told BBC Radio 2's Jo Whiley. "I've still got loads to do. I've got an Australia tour, but I kind of finish in December which is great, it gives me a chance to be in London, be in my home and go out with my friends."
Smith hinted at the news yesterday via Instagram. A photo shows him wearing a ring bearing the symbol of the titular criminal organization.
Spectre is in U.K. theaters October 26 and will release Nov. 6 in the U.S.
