Captain Planet was one of the best things about growing up in the '90s. The theme song was basically flawfree:
National treasure Whoopi Goldberg (and later Superman's Margot Kidder) provided the voice of supernatural diva Gaia, the spirit of Earth:
And aside from teaching a generation of youth the importance of protecting the environment, Captain Planet was also a certifiable hot piece:
Don't front, you totally would. And with that rainbow-hued transformation, it's pretty clear Cap wasn't trying to plant any seeds in Gaia's soil, if you catch ma drift.
Well, someone's decided to reboot Captain Planet for the 21st century and fittingly its tree-hugging superstar Leonardo DiCaprio. The Oscar-winning bear attack survivor is trying to secure the rights to the cartoon through his Appian Way Productions, in collaboration with Paramount Studios.
Appian and Paramount are eyeing Jono Matt and Scream Queens' Glen Powell to write the screenplay, as the duo, according to The Hollywood Reporter, has a "subversive take" on the material :
Sources say the story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.
It's not clear if the lantern-jawed Powell will play the lantern-jawed Cap, but if Scream Queens taught us anything, he at least has the physique for it:
Although, there's something greatly appealing, and soothing, about Leo--in full dad-bod mode--playing a washed-up Captain Planet.
