Introducing Lesbian Champion Soccer Player Barbie
Barbie is really having a comeback moment. Earlier this week, she embraced the reality that not every woman has an 18-inch waist and a size 3 shoe with a line of dolls in different sizes, shapes and colors. And just yesterday, Mattel unveiled a Barbie inspired by real life "shero" Abby Wambach.

The Olympian, World Cup Champion and Out's Athlete of the Year was on hand at the 2016 Makers Conference where the Abby Barbie made her debut appearance. Wambach revealed that she was in fact a big Barbie fan growing up, even though the dolls "may or may not have looked like I felt." She called the Abby Barbie an honor as well as an "impactful statement."
A part of Barbie's Shero Collection, which honors real life women, the Abby Wambach doll has 22 points of articulation and Abby's signature side-shaved 'do. Though as Wambach pointed out, the doll is a bit on the "svelte" side.
At 56, Barbie has reinvented herself more times than Cher and Madonna combined, and after giving generations of girls (and gays) #bod, #squad and #job goals--to varying degrees of success--she's finally a modern sister doing it for herself.
