#TBT: Remembering Blaine and Greg's Cruel Intentions Romance
Perhaps 'romance' is a little strong?
Now that Sarah Michelle Gellar has righted the world by reprising her role as Kathryn in the TV sequel to Cruel Intentions, it's time to focus on the second most important task at hand: revisiting the Blaine/Greg love story. And by "love story" I clearly mean "gay-shaming blackmail story."
In the original 1998 film, Blaine Tuttle (Joshua Jackson) and Greg McConnell (Eric Mabius) are ancillary characters, providing the necessary steps to get Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) into Annette's (Reese Witherspoon) pants. Because they're incidental to the story, Blaine and Greg are reduced to stereotypes: the closeted jock and the bitchy queen who threatens to out him.
But that was 18 years ago when playing gay was just a novelty, as were the characters being portrayed. So now with LGBT representation at an all-time high, will the Cruel Intentions show revisit and redeem Blaine and Greg?
Because in my mind, I always assumed they'd end up together, once Greg came out and Blaine dropped out of 98 Degrees.
Then they'd get married, Annette would officiate their wedding, and Cecile (Selma Blair) would be their surrogate. And they'd all live happily ever after--except Kathryn, who would be running a hedge fund or a small island-nation by now.
