The staging is slated to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Mean Girls.
It's confirmed: A stage musical adaptation of the 2004 cult classic Mean Girls is in the works.
According to NewNowNext, the movie's writer Tina Fey revealed her involvment in the project when New York Times' culture reporter Melena Ryzik asked her about the musical during a panel. Fey assured crowds that both her and her husband are collaborating on the musical:
"My husband, Jeff Richmond, and I [and lyricist] Nell Benjamin have been working on it," Fey said.
According to Telegraph, the musical is still "years away," but Richmond said that the script will be in "some kind of shape by the end of the summer," before production begins.
Songs based off of iconic quotes like "Fetch" and "October 3rd" will definitely be part of the musical. Characters like Damian, Gretchen, and Regina George will also have to shine in their own songs.
At the moment, creators aim to have the play "out by the Mean Girls 15th anniversary," in 2019. Casting hasn't start yet either, but in an interview with Vulture last year, Fey would like to cast some unknown faces.
"I think we really want to find interesting people that no one has seen before," Fey said. "I don't think I can say Audra McDonald will play Cady. Hopefully we'll find a young person who, at this moment, is still in college but will be making her way to New York as we write. Still a fetus somewhere."
