Lilly Wachowski (formerly Andy) recently came out as trans in a statement to Windy City Times.
"SEX CHANGE SHOCKER -- WACHOWSKI BROTHERS NOW SISTERS!!!" Lilly Wachowski (formerly Andy) humorously titled a statement in which she came out as trans. Her sister, Lana came out as trans in 2012.
Although Lilly has been living as an out trans person, she had not made a formal announcement regarding her transition. After a Daily Mail reporter knocked on her door to interview her about her gender identity, she decided it was time to come out on her own terms through a local LGBT outlet. She also noted that an elementary school teacher had killed herself after she was outed nationally by Daily Mail.
Lilly did not deny how fortunate she had been in her own process. As someone who can afford the medical expenses involved and who has a great support system, she credited herself as "one of the lucky ones":
"Everyone is cool with it. Yes, thanks to my fabulous sister, they've done it before, but also because they're fantastic people. Without the love and support of my wife and friends and family I would not be where I am today."
Her beautiful and informative statement can be read in full on Windy City Times.
Although the Wachowski sisters are most known for The Matrix franchise, their recent work includes Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending. They're currently in production on the second season of their Netflix original series, Sense8. One of the show's main characters is a trans woman portrayed by trans actress and activist, Jamie Clayton.
