Musical adaptations of movies can often be a recipe for disaster. Still, some of our favorite teen flicks like Bring It On, Heathers, and Jawbreaker have hit the stage, receiving a range of praise and criticism. Now the cult classic But I'm a Cheerleader may join the club.
A little refresher of the 1999 movie. Natasha Lyonne plays a young lesbian who hasn't realized she likes V until her parents send her to a conversion therapy camp where she falls in love with Clea Duvall. The film features numerous cameos from the likes of Melanie Lynskey, Michelle Williams, Eddie Cibrian, that kid who played Rufio in Hook, Cathy Moriarty, and RuPaul as a straight man (kind of).
Director Jamie Babbit told Same Same thatshe's interested in a musical version of the original LGBT teen movie:
"I would love to direct a full blown musical. Maybe sometime soon. They did a musical version of But I'm a Cheerleader in London with the Kinky Boots director. If they find investors I know they want to mount it as a musical on Broadway!"
