After Louie is a feature-length narrative film that explores the contradictions of modern gay life and the burden of a painful LGBT history.
The project, directed by Vincent Gagliostro, who shot much of the archival footage seen in How To Survive a Plague, is currently raising funds via Kickstarter to get into production.
Supported by writer and AIDS activist Larry Kramer, and led by an all-star cast including Alan Cumming, Wilson Cruz, Justin Vivian Bond, Joey Arias, and Patricia Field as costume designer, After Louie has already raised more than $12,000 from nearly 150 backers.
But it must raise more! The plot? Alan Cumming plays Sam, an AIDS activist and member of ACT UP in the 1980s and '90s, who witnessed the deaths of many close friends and lovers. Battle-wounded and struggling with survivor's guilt, Sam now resents the complacency of his former comrades, and derides what he sees as the younger generation's indifference to the politics of sex, and of death.
When Sam gets into an unexpected relationship with a much younger man, Braeden (Damages' Zachary Booth), he's forced to reconsider his understanding of contemporary gay culture and deal with the trauma that so informs his past, their present, and an unknown future.
After Louie will tackle the struggles our community faces in these changing times, and deal with the generational divide that opposes younger gay men and those elders who lived through the worst of the AIDS crisis. With such a crew on board, it's bound to be a must-see, and a potential favorite for the next award season.
