NBC premiered the variety show Maya and Marty on Tuesday, starring Saturday Night Live veterans Maya Rudolph and Martin Short. And a premiere just isn't a premiere without a gender-bending musical performance by the one and only Miley Cyrus.
Last year, Cyrus sat down with us and talked about her struggle with gender identity.
"I didn't want to be a boy. I kind of wanted to be nothing," she said. "I don't relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that's what I had to understand: Being a girl isn't what I hate, it's the box that I get put into."
Cyrus continued her quest to break down the gender binary this week. She sang Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" in a suit and tophat, followed by Peggy Lee's "I'm a Woman," in which she ripped her pants off to reveal a chic black leotard.
The performance was beautiful, intriguing, and made a not-so-subtle statement about what it means to be male or female today in America. Check it out below.
Maya and Marty airs on NBC Tuesdays at 10PM EST.
