Anastasia Musical Headed to Broadway in 2017
'90s kids rejoice! One of the best non-Disney animated features of that decade is heading to Broadway this coming spring.
After a successful stint in Hartford earlier this year, Anastasia is getting ready to take a turn in New York City. The play, which is based off the 1997 animated film, follows the last surviving daughter of the last Russian czar as she discovers the mysteries of her past with the help of a charming conman.
Stars from the Hartford production will follow the show to Broadway, including Christy Altomare (Mamma Mia) as Anya, Derek Klena (Dogfight) as Dmitri, John Bolton (A Christmas Story: The Musical) as Dmitri's right-hand, Vlad, and Caroline O'Connor (Chicago) as Countess Lily.
The original film, which featured the voices of Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Christopher Lloyd, and Angela Lansbury, remains Don Bluth's highest-grossing animated feature. Last year Disney bought the rights to Anastasia, ensuring that the film and its characters are properly immortalized.
Anastasia opens April 24, 2017 at the Broadhurst Theatre.
