HBO Planning True Blood Broadway Musical—Because Why Not?
From the land of That Doesn't Seem Necessary comes a Broadway musical based on the supernaturally sexy HBO show True Blood.
According to the New York Post, the music is by Nathan Barr, who scored the TV series, with a book and lyrics by young adult fiction author Elizabeth Scott. Director Pam McKinnon recently staged a secret reading in New York, though the musical reportedly needs some editing.
True Blood ran for seven seasons and gave the world naked Ryan Kwanten, Alexander Skarsgard and Joe Manganiello, among literally scores of other people. So if anything, the Broadway musical could be worth it for the man candy alone, but as the Post points out, vampires and Broadway have never been boffo box office.
Not even The Lion King's Elton John and Bernie Taupin could breathe life into Lestat, based on Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles, which closed after 39 performances and lost $10 million back in 2006.
Still, clearly someone thought True Blood: The Musical was a good idea and it already has a built-in audience, so we'll just have to see if it ever two-steps its way to the stage. Who knows it could be the next Hamilton. It won't be, but it could because in Bon Temps, anything is possible.
