Will Beyoncé's "Formation" slay Adele's "Hello"?
The 33rd annual MTV Music Video Awards returns to New York City next month, landing for the first time at Madison Square Garden.
Queen Bey is the top contender with a total of 11 nominations (her personal best) including Video of the Year, though she'll go head-to-head in most categories with Adele, who achieved one billion views on Youtube within three months with her Xavier Dolan-directed music video "Hello," earning her a total of eight nominations.
While the VMAs are shaping up to be a ladies' night, three major videos from male artists round out the Video of the Year category: Kanye West's controversial "Famous," Justin Bieber's infectious apology anthem "Sorry and Drake's meme generating "Hotline Bling."
Reflecting the evolution of music videos, the VMAs introduced two new categories this year, Best Electronic Video and Breakthrough Longform Video. Calvin Harris, Mike Posner, Afrojack, 99 Souls, and The Chainsmokers will vie for top Electronic Video honors; Bey's Lemonade will compete against Florence + The Machine, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Out cover star Troye Sivan for Longform Video.
