The Handmaid’s Tale Trailer Depicts a Frightening Dystopia
The new series is based on a novel by Margaret Atwood.
After some eerie promotion at SXSW and a protest against Texas's anti-abortion law, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale is piquing our interest. Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, it depicts a dystopian alternate reality in which a theocratic military dictatorship has overthrown the US government and stripped women of their rights, forcing some to bear children for leaders whose wives are barren.
In the first full trailer, Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black), and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) give us a glimpse at this unsettling story. After women are no longer allowed employment, they're rounded up and taken prisoner. The story is all too timely given the country's current social and political climates.
The Handmaid's Tale premieres April 21 at Tribeca Film Festival and April 26 on Hulu. Watch the full trailer below:
