Billie Jean King is one of the greatest sports legends of our time. Not to mention, she's a champion of feminism and the LGBTQ community. It's about the time she got the big screen treatment.
In Battle of the Sexes, Emma Stone plays a young King at the prime of her career. In 1973, she was approached by former champ, Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) to play a match that would spark a conversation on gender equality. Dubbed as the "Battle of the Sexes," the televised sporting event was the '70s equivalent of a viral sensation, bringing light to the feminist movement. But behind the match, Riggs and King were dealing with their own struggles, Riggs facing financial issues and King coming to terms with her sexuality.
This isn't the only film about this infamous match in the works. Although few updates have been available, Elizabeth Banks was set to play King, opposite Paul Giamatti as Riggs in an HBO movie about the match. Meanwhile, Will Ferrell was also in talks to star as Riggs in a version more focused on the male athlete.
Battle of the Sexes premieres September 22. Watch the trailer, below:
