“That’s what you get when you pick a rose.”
A lot has changed in the world since singer/songwriter Bonnie McKee broke onto the scene in 2013 with her summer hit, "American Girl." With the release of her latest single, "Thorns," the singer walks fans through a darker part of her personality and art.

"I was travelling all over the world doing a lot of session writing for other artists," McKee told OUT. "I had a mental breakdown and needed to reassess what really makes me happy. I realized that being an artist is all I care about. There's a few artists here and there that I really love writing for, but just being a songwriter as a job doesn't bring me a lot of joy. I had to sit down with myself to look at my own art and think about what was honest and what was real."
There's no doubt that the subject matter of "Thorns" strikes a deeper chord within McKee than the bubblegum vibe of a summer jam like "American Girl." Now, in the video for "Thorns," McKee takes the literal and figurative route when presenting the grittier parts of herself. Exchanging Slurpees and neon for switchblades and leather, McKee warns about the sharp, pricking parts of herself. Watch, below.
