Big Little Newsflash: Liane Moriarty, the novelist behind Big Little Lies, has revealed how Meryl ended up on the second season of the show.
Per an interview in the Daily Telegraph, Moriarty reportedly revealed that she wrote the character of Perry Wright's mother, Mary Louise Wright, with Streep in mind.
"I was about half way through [writing season two] and I was talking to the producers and I said, I've got this role of Perry's mother and ... not quite believing my own audacity, I'd like Meryl to play this character," she said, adding: "[the producers] were saying, it's not beyond the realm of possibilities because Nicole and Meryl are friends."
And, of course, Nicole Kidman being the true embodiment of glory and goodness in this oft cold and bitter world, she was able to secure her The Hours costar with the power of an email.
"Nicole sent me an email saying, 'Ask and you shall receive,'" Moriarty explains.
What else did we learn from Moriarty's interview? Just that Mary Louise "deeply loved her son... as much as any mother can love her son. She had a slightly fraught relationship with her daughter-in-law, so it's a very complicated, difficult time." Could it mean a frosty matriarch like Miranda Priestley is on her way to Monterey? We now must pray.
