Sean Hayes Reveals Why He Waited Years to Come Out

“It was a scary time. We got death threats,” the Will & Grace actor explained.

It was over a decade after Will & Grace first aired, and five years following the initial run's season finale, when Sean Hayes publicly came out as gay.

The actor who plays the hilarious Jack McFarland opened up in Attitude's December issue about why he waited until 2010 before letting the public know about his sexuality.

"It was a scary time," he said. "We got death threats, [people] could find out where I lived, and I was playing a gay character in a big hit show."

Hayes continued, "I was too scared. I wasn't looking to be an activist of any kind. I didn't have the courage and the strength at such a young age to speak on behalf of the gay community."

Now, however, the 48-year-old actor is openly gay and has been married to his partner Scott Icenogle since 2014.

Proudly, he told Attitude that he has "nothing to hide any more."
