The ‘Call Me By Your Name’ Author Is Already Writing the Sequel

'Call Me By Your Name' Director Shares Details About Planned Sequel

The author broke the news on Twitter.

Last week it became official: a Call Me By Your Name sequel is set to hit theaters. Without a follow-up novel, however, it remained unclear how Luca Guadagnino planned to direct the film.

Previously, Andre Aciman, author of the original 2007 novel, told Vulture that a CMBYN sequel would be "wonderful."

"The problem with a sequel," the author continued, "is that you need a plot."

Now, it seems as if Aciman has a plot in mind for the novel's continuation, and he's already in the process of writing it down. The author tweeted on December 3: "I would actually love a sequel to Call Me by Your Name. In fact I am writing one."

At this point, it's still unclear if Guadagnino's upcoming film will reflect the plot points in Aciman's sequel.

The first CMBYN was a huge commercial and critical success among both queer and straight audiences with three Oscar nominations, including a win for Best Adapted Screenplay. Following the film's release last year, the decade old novel resurged to become a New York Times, USA Today, and Los Angeles Times bestseller.

Still, the original film was not above criticism, which we explored in a piece last week for OUT.com. Culture writer Michael Cuby commented, "It's difficult to think of a recent film that was more polarizing than Call Me By Your Name, which was either adored for its portrayal of an whirlwind romance in which the stakes were somehow both high and nonexistent, or abhorred for its vision of 'queer' love that is actually quite white, straight, and surprisingly sexless."

The omission of overt sex scenes in the film -- something the book did not shy away from -- left many queer folks feeling like the film was yet another version of "pinkwashing." Between that and the film's two heterosexual actors, it felt like there was still a lot of room for quality improvement, despite all the mainstream accolades.

Only time will tell if the film and novel sequels will address their criticisms.

What do we think the title of the sequel will be? CMBYN 2: Elio's Revenge? And I'll Call You By Mine? Elio and the Giant Peach?
