Joining the likes of Mean Girls, Pretty Woman, and Kinky Boots, Mrs. Doubtfire is headed for the Great White Way. The 1993 classic is becoming a Broadway musical.
In case you haven't seen the iconic film, it's about Daniel (Robin Williams), a man struggling with divorce and custody arrangements. In order to see more of his children, he's willing to go to insane lengths. That's how Mrs. Doubtfire is born, his alter ego who gets hired as their new nanny.
It will be directed by four-time Tony winner, Jerry Zaks, who recently revived Hello, Dolly! for Broadway. With book by John O'Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick and music/lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick, it will be based on best-selling novel, Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine. In 2015, the musical was announced with a different creative team, including Harvey Fierstein, who also appeared in the film.
"Mrs. Doubtfire is such a beloved story, both laugh-out-loud hilarious and extremely moving," said Kevin McCollum and Bob Cohen of Fox Stage Productions. "Getting this team together and crafting Mrs. Doubtfire for the stage has been pure joy. We can't wait to get into production."
