Sam Smith & Calvin Harris Pay Homage to Ball Culture in “Promises” Video

Promises

“Be celebrated, not just accepted."

Sam Smith and Calvin Harris delve into the world of NYC ball culture in their new music video for "Promises."

The balls have always been a huge part of queer culture, however, Ryan Murphy's Pose is responsible for bringing the history of ball and ball culture to mainstream society.

The "Promises" video, directed by Emil Nava, features a number of dancers talking about their involvement in ball culture, and what being part of that scene means to them.

"It's just like that let go, of not having to be somebody that I don't want to be at that time," says one dancer.

"It's fantasy. One hundred percent fantasy," says another.

"Growing up in the Bronx you have to carry this tough skin," a third dancer continues, "Finding Vogue, it allowed me to express myself in a way that I couldn't express myself anywhere else."

"You really can do anything in that world, and be accepted. Be celebrated, not just accepted."
