RuPaul Refused to Let Manila Luzon Be a Maxi Pad on All Stars

RuPaul Refused to Let Manila Luzon Be a Maxi Pad On 'All Stars'

“It is not my show, it’s Ru’s.”

Last week's episode of RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars was undoubtedly the most dramatic of the season thus far, concluding with eternally beloved fan favorite Latrice Royale being sent home by Monique Heart. Monique was given the thankless task of sending Royale home after besting Manila Luzon in a lip sync to Tina Turner's cover of Elton John classic "The Bitch Is Back." Manila wowed the judges with both her performance in the Jersey Justice improv challenge and her Chanel-inspired quilted "curves and swerves" runway look, but as it turns out, that wasn't the look she was actually planning to wear on the runway.

Early Monday morning, Luzon posted a photo on Instagram of her original runway look, a dress designed to look like a giant bloody maxi pad. In the accompanying caption, Luzon explained that it was RuPaul himself who forced her to change her look.

"Ru said my ORIGINAL curves [and] swerves runway look was in 'bad taste' and production told me to wear my back up," the queen wrote. "I was really looking forward to wearing this gown that I think celebrates a perfectly normal human experience! Many of my fans are young women who may feel pressured by society to be embarrassed by periods. It's empowering to teach young women about their bodies, encourage them to celebrate them AND to question people who tell them not to!"

"My goal with this look was to normalize menstruation by looking sick'ning even if I was on my period," explained Luzon."Instead, I decided to wear the beautiful quilted dress you saw in the episode because it is not my show, it's Ru's."

Luzon ended her post on a positive note, adding that "because of Ru, I have my very own platform to speak for myself and show you all my interpretation!"
