It's that time again: time to start preparing for Pride. And though it's not a momentous occasion like the 50 year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, there's still quite a bit of news. Namely, the performers for Pride Island.
For 2020, New York City's Pride Island will host none other than Janelle Monae as its headliner for the Saturday night festivities. Fresh off of a performance at the Oscars where she called the awards show out in a spectacular opening performance. The singer is on a bit of a roll (and honestly has been for a while) with the thriller Antebellum out in April and Homecoming season 2 out in May -- she stars in both projects.
"Pride means so much to so many of us, and to have the opportunity to share my live performance during Pride has always been a dream", Monae said in a statement. "Celebrating Pride in NYC is a rite of passage for a queer person, I am grateful for the community it creates and I can't wait to party with everyone."
Monae is, of course, not the only name on the lineup of the multi-day Pride Island. Before she hits the stage Saturday night, Betty Who, Luisa Sonza, and Pussy Riot will also perform on Saturday. The dj-ing and designer twins Coco & Breezy will also do a set. Talk about strong femme energy!
Last year the event boasted acts like Grace Jones, Teyana Taylor, Pabllo Vittar, and Madonna.
The Friday and Sunday night headliners have not been announced yet but djs Dani Toro and Eddie Martinez will perform sets on Sunday. Tickets for Pride Island go on sale on March 13.
