Year after year, Calvin Klein has been giving us some pretty amazing Pride campaigns and 2020 is no different. Launched today, the campaign spans photos and videos shot by Ryan McGinley. And the cast? Whew, what a cast.
Pabllo Vittar, Tommy Dorfman, Chella Man, Mina Gerges, Jari Jones, Gia Woods, Reece King, Ama Elsesser, and MaryV all appear as a part of the project. Vittar, a musician that also happens to be the most followed drag queen on Instagram, makes history as the first drag entertainer to be shot for a global campaign for the label. She had previously appeared as a spokesperson for Calvin Klein Brazil.
The accompanying video deals with the featured personalities talking about being proud in who they are, eschewing shame, and other societal factors that might make them hide.
"I'm writing my own story now," one says.
In other deep-dive features, each goes into further detail about their own stories. Jones, who is an actress, model, and the first Black trans producer to have a film premiere at Cannes, talks about her chosen family.
"I am a mom to a whole bunch of queer youth," she says. "Some of these kids have come to New York City with not a dime in their pocket and just a big dream. But you know, they have things against them, they're of color, they're queer, they're trans and I'm just there to be their support."
In his, Mina Gerges speaks about his intersections as a gay Egyptian.
"You can't let hatred win, you can't let other people decide who you are," he says.
Showing the diversity of experiences, Vittar speaks of how accepted she was by her family.
"I feel grateful because my family always supported me and never let me down, and believed in my dreams," she says. "When I put on my wig, my wishes, and my makeup I feel happy because this is me."
The campaign comes alongside the brand's ongoing support of The Equality Project and sponsorship of PFLAG National. An affiliated apparel collection has been released and more product will roll out over the next few weeks. (Yes, the jockstrap is back!) View more of the videos below.
