It was a busy weekend in Chicago. On Saturday, in the midsts of International Mr. Leather weekend, the Grabby's held it's 20th annual ceremony. Handing out over 30 awards and signs of recognition, the event, which was heavily rumored to be the last following the death of organizer Mark Nagel, celebrated the best and the greatest of the gay porn industry.
"Me and Mark always joked amongst ourselves that yes, the GayVNs are the 'Oscars of gay porn,'" Stacy Bridges, who produced the Grabby's alongside Nagel who died of an epileptic seizure in February, told Out. "We, [the Grabby's,] are the Golden Globes."
This year's event was hosted by Honey West and ChiChi LaRue, who have both hosted the Grabby's since it was founded by Gay Chicago Magazine's co-founder Ralph Gernhardt. At the time, it was held at the since-closed bath house Man's Country, then owned by Chuck Renslow, the founder of IML.
Among the awards some of the highlights included Max Konnor and Boomer Banks who both won for Hottest Cock -- circumcised and uncircumcised respectively. "This is actually my second best cock award," Banks said on the stage. Max Adonis cried on stage when his name was announced for Best Newcomer alongside Alam Wernick.
Adam Killian, Ryan Rose, mr. Pam, Johnny V, and David Aries were all inducted into the Grabby's Wall of Fame, Kilian taking to the stage in a Tom of Finland bodysuit. "Mark really supported me early on and he's the reason I got so many awards and so much attention," he said. The tribute was one of many throughout the night in honor of Nagel. His sister took to the stage to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in his honor, one of only seven given away in the history of the show.
"I was kind of dreading the award because it's kind of like you're going out to pasture, but I'm not going nowhere." mr. Pam said when they received their Wall of Fame induction. They also took home an award for Best Videography in "The Last Rose." When Johnny V went up to be inducted, he used the moment to poke verbal jabs at longtime friend Rose. It devolved into the two stripping off their shirts onstage to see who had the better body. Sorry boys but DeAngelo Jackson, who received the trophy for Hottest Body, will always win that award.
In a sign of the times, fan site platform JustFor.Fans won the Best Web Original Content award beating out sites like Noir Male, Men.com, and CockyBoys. The service also sponsored a fan award which went to top performer Griffin Barrows. "I went through a period of time in my life where I was kicked out by my very conservative family and I was homeless for a bit," he said in his acceptance speech. "But my porn family took me in and took care of me." That family has also expanded with his ever-growing fandom as, outside of the event, a few people asked the performer for photos.
"What sets the Grabby's apart from other porn shows is we are 80 percent fans and 20 percent industry and most of the other shows are the reverse in terms of attendance," Bridges told Out. "I feel like the porn stars actually feel like a celebrity when they come." And that feeling is not likely to leave soon. Though he had said previously to some that this would be the final Grabby's, Bridges reversed that decision on stage, later telling Out that it was because of the enthusiasm for the weekend and how important the event is for the industry.
"Something special is brewing for next year," he said on stage. "Grabby's is not over."
