Podcasts have given us many things: the knowledge that Delta Work is an icon whose musings we all need to hear; insider, backstage gossip from those who have been on set ofRuPaul's Drag Race; and discourse about relationships that we otherwise probably could have done without.
This week, podcasts bring us a sweet little anecdote from one Boomer Banks.
Banks is best known as a multi-award-winning porn star who has also made a name for himself as a reality star, an activist, and a designer. This week, he appeared on the Sloppy Seconds podcast hosted by Big Dipper and Meatball. (The pair have been running the podcast since launching it in June 2019 featuring guests like Eureka O'Hara, Joel Kim Booster, Orville Peck, King Dwarf, and more.) On it, he talked about everything from which RuPaul's Drag Race alum he's hooked up with and how (exactly), to his journey to sobriety and how it began, to what to expect on the next season of X-Rated: NYC.
And here's what we found out...
The pandemic was a very wild time. We were hanging out our windows banging pots and pans, ordering alcohol to our homes, turning on neon lights to pretend like we were in clubs via Zoom, and buying a whole lot of plants. But as the world began to open up, hordes of people wanted to be up close and personal with their neighbors, which ushered in a bit of a cruising renaissance. One of the memorable liaisons? Boomer Banks and Dahlia Sin.
"This was a little after the pandemic and people started cruising again in New York," Banks said on the episode. "So I get to [the spot] once and there's this guy with all these tattoos. At the time everybody's wearing masks. He's wearing a beanie and his hoodie over it." As Banks describes, while he's hooking up with one guy, he sees the tattooed guy and decides to switch.
"I'm kind of looking back and I was like, 'It looks like Dahlia Sin,' but I'm not ruining this fantasy," he continues.
According to a message Banks got afterward, Sin told him, "That was hot girl, we should do that again and we should film," likely referring to filming for her OnlyFans account. But Banks is a bit undecided about actually filming together or even hooking up again.
"I just respect my girls so much," he says in the episode. "I'd rather be their brother.
Porn star. Reality Star. Activist. Fashion Designer. Now DJ? As of this summer, it seems that's true. Banks has recently begun DJing at gigs and is set to play in Provincetown for the Fourth of July. For him, it makes sense given his "proximity to DJs, especially house DJs which is the music that makes me so happy to hear."
"People are like how do you stay at these events so long without being paid: it's the music," he says. He began taking lessons from the legendary Nita Aviance, who has done official remixes for stars like Beyoncé and is an in-demand spinner.
"I want to learn how to produce eventually," he says on the episode.
That's what we call a multihyphenate! According to him, it began as a way to fill a hole left by the tragic loss of his friend Andre Hurtado.
Late last year, Banks was one of the original cast members of X-Rated: NYC. The reality show took viewers inside the lives of male adult stars living in New York City. Shortly after airing, the series was renewed for seasons two and three in addition to a Los Angeles version — and filming has already started.
According to Banks, filming for season 2 began in December. "It was such a whirlwind," he says, explaining that seasons 2 and 3 were filmed consecutively with season 2 happening around the time that his close friend Andre Hurtado passed. "That's kind of interwoven into the storyline and kind of softens me up."
"People are expecting Boomer Banks and I'm like, my best friend just passed away," he says. There's no current announced date that season 2 will air but it is expected in Fall 2023. Banks describes his relationship with Hurtado as extremely intimate but not sexual.
"I know I will find that again but when I lost him I felt gutted in a way that felt like I was losing the love of my life," he says. "And I think I did."
