An Olympic love story 20 years in the making.
Twenty years ago, the only gay story connected to the Olympics seemed to be that of diver and gold medalist Greg Louganis.
But Guy Sandin, a then-closeted athlete competing on Puerto Rico's diving team at the Atlanta Summer Games in 1996, would later add his own story to the growing number of LGBTQ Olympic voices, by getting married to his boyfriend Michael Maruo in Los Angeles this month.
Sandin, who competed in Atlanta under the name Ramon Sandin, came out in 2000 and eventually retired from competitive diving to focus on acting in Los Angeles under the name Guy Sandin. Mauro is a massage therapist, and the pair celebrated their nuptials with a gorgeous beach wedding.
This summer will see a record number of out athletes competing at the Olympic Games in Rio de Jainero.
