Jake Atlas is ready to get tapped in, Mr. McMahon.
According to reports, Atlas is set to join the WWE after signing a deal with the league that will see him start in January 2020. The blogLast Word on Pro Wrestling claims the 24-year old "was approached by WWE officials at the... Battle Of Los Angeles event which took place last month," a yearly tournament hosted by Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Atlas was eliminated in the semifinals.
Atlas came out in 2018 during an episode of Celebrity Undercover Boss featuring Stephanie McMahon, daughter of WWE cofounder and CEO Vince McMahon. Shortly after, he was named an ambassador for the company.
The wrestler has yet to confirm or deny the report, but if true, Atlas would be just the second out gay man to perform in the WWE following Darren Young. Although Orlando Jordan, Chris Kanyon, and Pat Patterson came out following their retirement, Young is the only member of the group to be out while still active. Meanwhile, Sonya Deville is the first WWE superstar to be an out lesbian.
But while he did not comment on the claims, Atlas did push back on being described as a "gay wrestler" in news reports surrouding the possible milestone.
"I'm a wrestler," he said in a Tuesday tweet, which was liked more than 4,000 times.
Atlas was named SoCal Uncensored's Rookie of the Year in 2018. He is also the reigning APW Universal Heavyweight Champion and PCW ULTRA Light Heavyweight Champion.
