Ever since Twitter was taken over by new owner Elon Musk, the social network became an even more treacherous place for LGBTQ+ people. Various alternatives for text-based social platforms were launched in an attempt to compete with Twitter, but none of them had truly succeeded so far.
On Wednesday, July 5, Facebook’s parent company Meta launched its official Twitter rival app, Threads, promising that this would be a more inclusive, positive, and kinder text-based social network. As of Friday, July 7, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that 70 million users had already signed up for Threads – a very significant achievement for the social network’s first 48 hours on the App Store.
As expected, LGBTQ+ people are flooding Threads with powerful messages, hilarious memes, thirst traps, and everything in between. Though there are several concerns over Meta’s privacy policies and hateful speech guidelines, queer people are – so far – finding that this is a much better social platform than Musk’s Twitter.
