Lee Daniels is following up the runaway success of Empire with a new primetime soap exploring the shady dealings of the music industry, Star. This time, we get to see the other side of the game, following three young girls on their quest for pop stardom, with the help of a pistol-packing, wig-snatching Queen Latifah as Carlotta and her daughter Cotton, played by stunning newcomer Amiyah Scott.
With Cotton, Star continues Empire's groundbreaking portrayal of queer people of color, as first seen with Jussie Smollet's Jamal Lyon.

Cotton struggles to have Carlotta accept her as a daughter, but still bears the influence of her mother's dark past: her tendency to indulge in some light pole work at a gentleman's club landed her in some hot water in the pilot episode, which aired December 16.
