The performer is now going to be working on a new CW show.
If you weren't sure before, Shangela Laquifa Wadley didn't need a crown. She's been consistently building her throne since her first appearance on RuPaul's Drag Raceand it's clear she's nowhere near done. Now, the A Star is Born actor has booked her next television gig.
Shangela will take up the role of "ruthless" drag queen in The CW's Katy Keene, as first reported by The Wrap. That show is a spinoff of the popular Riverdale series. Shangela's team confirmed the news to Out in an email.
The queen in question, named Devereaux, went "from internet personality to A-list drag queen," the character description says. "Her greatest talent is flaunting this wave of access" and her "ruthless competitiveness is what keeps her on top." We've never seen our dear Shangie as ruthless but she is an actress, so!
The role is slated to appear on episode 106 in a guest capacity as the pageant rival of Ginger Lopez/Jorge played by Johnny Beauchamp. There is the option that we could see her pop back into the show down the line, in a repeat to her Drag Race experience. But even if she doesn't, she'll be pretty busy.
This week, HBO announced the performer is also starring in We're Here, a new series that uses actual drag queens in what sounds like a real-life To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar recreation. She will take her road trip alongside Bob the Drag Queen and Eureka O'Hara for this six-part show. All of this notably follows her historic walk on the Oscars red carpet earlier this year.
