Empire Will Feature the First Black Gay Wedding on Network TV
This episode could also be Jussie Smollett’s last.
Wedding bells are coming to Empire.
Jussie Smollett's character Jamal Lyons and his fiance Kai will tie the knot on Wednesday night's episode, Essence reports. The wedding will be the first time a Black gay couple will wed on a major network.
Because this is Empire and there has to be some shady intrigue planned, the pair's ceremony will be undermined by a not-yet-designated vindictive person. The episode will also feature music icon Chaka Khan as herself, singing to the couple's good fortune.
In an clip posted to YouTube, Khan says, "Today's wedding is special and controversial, but my answer to all that is just love is love."
Singer Mario will also guest star in the episode.
"What's fun about it is sort of getting to be at a weird kind of family function with your work family," Gabourey Sidibe, who plays Becky on the show, says in the video.
Wednesday's episode, "Never Doubt I Love," could be Smollett's final episode on the series. He was written out of the show's final two episodes following his legal troubles stemming from an alleged attack he experienced on January 29 near his Chicago home. After police investigation into the matter, Smollett was charged with filing a false police report, though prosecutors later dropped the charges.
