After teasing audiences with a sneak peek of the new film adaptation on social media, Ryan Murphy is back with the official first look of Netflix's The Prom. Starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, Andrew Rannels, Ariana DeBose, and more, the film is only the latest from Murphy's ever-growing set of projects.
"I'm really tired of hearing about bad news and Trump," he said of picking up the project. "I want to see entertainment that is optimistic and uplifting."
Directed by Murphy, The Prom is a film adaptation of Chad Beguelin, Bob Martin, and Matthew Sklar's Tony-nominated Broadway musical of the same name. Martin and Beguelin came aboard to write the screenplay. Murphy announced the project at a special performance of the play in 2019. There, he had bought out half the seats in the auidience and it benefitted Hetrick-Martin Institute, GLAAD and the Trevor Project.
In the film Dee Dee Allen, played by Streep, and Barry Glickman, played by James Corden, are Broadway stars who've just had a flop of a show. With their careers possibly in jeopardy, they come up with a crisis management project: help out a high school student named Emma Nolan (played by Jo Ellen Pellman) who can't attend her prom with her girlfriend Alyssa (played by Ariana DeBose.) So Allen, Glickman, and some of their friends (that's Angie played by Kidman and Trent played by Rannells) hit the road to work a miracle for both the teen and their careers. You can only imagine how wrong it all goes.
The Prom will drop on Netflix on December 11.
