It looks like we have hit the ground running! 2021 has just started and already, the Gossip Girl reboot is three steps ahead of us. The upcoming series has unveiled its cast and characters in a series of posts on Instagram with the briefest descriptions possible.
We first started hearing about the Gossip Girl reboot back in the summer of 2019. Details were pretty mum at the time, but since we've been clued in: the show picks up some eight years after the site went dark. Now, social media is the name of the game which changes the stakes. In addition, there's a load of queer characters and content within the new group of Upper East Siders.
A few weeks ago, the cast was spotted mid-filming in New York City. They had returned to the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Blair Waldorf once reigned supreme. In those shots, it was clear that visually, at least, the cast was much more diverse than the first iteration of the show. Now, we have some character names (and portraits) to add to the fray.
Evan Mock, Tavi Gevinson, and Thomas Doherty's characters of Akeno "Aki" Menzies, Kate Keller, and Max Wolfe, come with descriptors like innocence, ambition, and freedom respectively. While this doesn't tell us much, it's just the sort of teasing that had us hooked on the first run of the show. It is not clear yet which characters are queer.
More characters are available on the Instagram account.
The Gossip Girl reboot is expected to debut on HBO Max later this year. It is a part of quite the lineup of shows we are looking forward to from the streamer like It's a Sin as well as the second season of Legendary. Couple all of that with the platform's new effort which will see it debut films from Warner Bros. during their initial theatrical releases, and recently released new classics like Veneno and HBO Max is the one to watch right now.
The streamer is currently hosting the original Gossip Girl for viewing.
