HBO Max's Gossip Girl Reboot Renewed for Season Two

The gossip is spreading even further.

HBO Max's more diverse, more queer reboot of Gossip Girlhas been renewed for a second season before the first season even ends. The second part of season one is set to debut on the streaming service later this year in November.

This reboot of the iconic CW series is set nine years after the end of the original show, following a new generation of New York private school teens who find themselves being watched, and talked about, by the mysterious Gossip Girl.

When the reboot premiered, it became HBO Max's most-watched original series, having viewers in over 555,000 US households in the first four days. Part of the reason for the reboot's success is that the cast more accurately reflects what teens in New York look and act like. Where the old series was filled with white, straight people, the new one focuses on people of color and has a large queer cast.

Season one of Gossip Girl stars Evan Mock, Thomas Doherty, Emily Alyn Lynd, Zion Moreno, Savannah Smith, Jordan Alexander, Whitney Peak, and Eli Brown. Josh Safran is serving as creator, writer, and executive producer. Safran wrote on the original show and was the only queer writer on the staff.

One of our favorite new characters is lesbian mean girl Monet de Haan, played by Savannah Smith. The character originally wasn't written as queer, but when Safran saw Smith, who is bisexual, he knew he wanted to make Monet a lesbian.

"I saw Savannah being authentic and living her life," Safran told Them. "So I said to her, 'Savannah, would you feel comfortable if Monet was a lesbian?' and she was like, 'Absolutely, sign me up!'"

The first six episodes of season one are currently available to stream on HBO Max, with the second half of the season returning this November!
