It's been a minute!
At this point, it has been literal years since we first heard rumblings about Manila Luzon's upcoming televised drag competition. The RuPaul's Drag Race alum was rumored to be working on a series that some expected to be Drag Race Philippines which launched this year. But then, before Drag Race announced their series, Luzon introduced Drag Den Philippines.
At the time -- this was back in July 2021 -- Drag Den was marketed as the first Filipino drag reality show. And while it may have been the first to announce, Drag Race Philippines ended up being the first to air. But on Wednesday, after over a year of very few updates, the series has kicked into high gear with a release date, eight competing queens, and a streaming partner.
Drag Den Philippines will launch on December 8, 2022. Eight queens will compete with Manila Luzon as "drag lord," Sassa Gurl as "drag runner," and Nicole Cordoves "drag dealer." They are vying for the title of "First-Ever Filipino Drag Supreme." You can watch and stream the series globally on Amazon Prime.
According to reports, Drag Den will not follow the Drag Race format, but might instead be more akin to Chile's The Switch, a unique show in the Drag Race franchise. As opposed to just showing footage from the Werk Room and Main Stage, some have said that Drag Den will also have the contestants all living in one house and will show viewers their lives there, as well. This would also fall more in line with America's Next Top Model, which Drag Race was originally inspired by.
