Daytime TV's First Gay Married Couple Is Returning to Days of Our Lives
The latest preview for NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives is teasing the return of two iconic characters: Will and Sonny -- but this time, they're not coming back alone!
Actor Billy Flynn, who plays Chad DiMera on the show, introduced the latest preview, saying, "good news, two of my best friends are coming back to Salem." We then see Chad embracing Will and Sonny, who had become two of his closest friends in their time on the long-running soap.
But then the bad news came in the form of Leo Stark, Sonny's conman ex, who is also returning. It seems like a game is afoot, however, as Will and Sonny tell Chad, "we have to understand this guy's weaknesses if we want to exploit them."
"And how do you propose we do that?" Chad asks.
The two smile huge grins, leaving Chad wondering what their plan is. Could they be setting him up on a date with Leo in order to get some inside information? We'll have to watch to find out!
Will Horton (Chandler Massey) and Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) made history when they became the first male-male couple to get married on daytime drama TV back in 2014. Sonny was introduced first, and it took him a year and a half before he finally got a boyfriend. But when the two got together, they immediately became a fan favorite couple.
In classic soap style, the pair have been through quite a lot of ups and downs, including Sonny being recast with actor Guy Wilson, then the role going back to Smith a few years later. They also had marital problems, including infidelity, memory loss, and Will was even strangled to death by a serial killer.
However, Will later was revealed to be alive, and once again suffering from memory loss. While some of his memories came back, he still wasn't ready to get back in a relationship with Sonny, and for a while, he dated another character named Paul. At that time, Sonny started dating Leo Starke, who turned out to be a conman. In 2018, Will's memories returned and he and Sonny kissed at his grandma's wedding, and the two became a couple again.
Largely because of Will and Sonny, known as "WilSon" by fans, Days of Our Lives won four GLAAD Media Awards for Best Daily Drama. Massey also won three Daytime Emmys, becoming the first actor to win Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series awards for playing a gay character. Later, Smith won the same award.
Days of Our Lives returns to NBC on Monday, February 21st after the Winter Olympics.
