Is anyone here Legendary?
HBO Max's ballroom competition show Legendary is back for season three and there's a few changes in store. The show pits houses from the ballroom scene against one another in a series of weekly balls with one achieving "legendary" status and a grand prize of $100,000 at the end of the show. In addition to over-the-top vogue performances, the series has begun to develop a reputation for a bit of panel drama. Now, that panel is getting a change.
While Dashaun Wesley will stay on as host, and Jameela Jamil, Law Roach, as well as Leiomy Maldonado will continue as permanent judges, it looks like Megan Thee Stallion has exited the show. In her place comes the multihyphenate, always booked, Keke Palmer who makes her debut in the show's new trailer. While there was no actual reason released for why Megan isn't continuing on, we're assuming it's simply that she's focusing on her career which has exploded since the show began and she can finally do live performances again.
Glad you asked!
According to EW, Legendary season three will release the first three episodes on May 19. Three episodes will be released every week until June 9 when episode nine and 10 drop. The show airs on HBO Max.
In the time honored tradition of competition shows, each episode of Legendary features a guest judge. We've seen quite a number featured in this year's trailer with others rumored on social media and even more confirmed to EW. Of the names: Kelly Rowland, Bob the Drag Queen, Anitta, Issa Rae, and Leslie Jones. Oh and Domninique Jackson, known as Pose's amazing Elektra and as one half of the award-nominated Legendary season 1 fight, will be making her return.
Even before the show announced the houses (we published this story before and then added on later) there were a few notables from the trailer that we could not miss. First up:RuPaul's Drag Race's Aja. For those who haven't been following her closely, over the past year or so, Aja has been making a foray into the ballroom scene walking the runway and performance categories with the House of LaBeija. In the trailer we can hear her unmistakable voice saying "I want to win!"
In addition, Jelani LaBeija is featured. We last saw Jelani when we shot him for our 2019 Pride Issue following his appearance on the docuseries My House.
Outside of that, Lolita Balenciaga is featured. Many will remember Lolita from her scene-stealing moment in season two where she appeared as a "villain" and pulled Mikayla Lanvin by her cape in a runway battle. Given that the house of Balenciaga competed in season two, we doubt that house is competing again. But as we've also spied Brooklyn Miyake-Mugler and Kimayah, with the three of them sitting in velour tracksuits, we think this might be the House of Juicy Couture from ballroom's kiki scene.
For the last house we feel definitive about, there's the House of Alpha Omega. When the trailer opens we see Renaldo Alpha Omega, who is a principal dancer with Alvin Ailey and one of the fathers of the house. In another, we see Adam Alpha Omega who is, personally one of this writer's favorite butch queen vogue fem performers.
It's definitely going to be a season to pay attention to. Keep scrolling to see all the houses of Legendary season three.
