Big, Black and queer-ass America Broadway show!
After winning a Pulitzer for its Off-Broadway run, Michael R. Jackson's A Strange Loop, the musical has nabbed 11 nominations at the 75th annual Tony Awards. Of them, L Morgan Lee made history for Best Performance By an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. Lee is the first trans actress nominated for a Tony.
A Strange Loop also has the most 2022 Tony Nominations of any production.
Revolving around the main character Usher, who is an usher for a Broadway production of The Lion King, A Strange Loop is a stunning musical about a gay man writing a musical about a gay man writing a musical about ... well you get it. With producers like RuPaul, Billy Porter, and Zach Stafford, the project is at once unapologetically Black, queer, and big while also completely universal. The cast is rounded out by Usher's thoughts who serve as stand-ins for not only the voices in his head but also cosplay as the people in his life. Lee is one of those thoughts.
In addition to Lee's nomination, the production was nominated for Best Direction of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score of a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical. John-Andrew Morrison was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. Jaquel Spivey was also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.
It was also nominated for Best Musical, receiving the most nominations for a musical this year.
The 75th Annual Tony Awards will be hosted by Ariana DeBose and will take place on Sunday, June 12, 2022. They will air on the CBS Television Network and stream live and on demand on Paramount + from 8pm to 11pm.
