“When you’re good to Mama, Mama’s good to you!”
This week, Playbill reported a significant uptick in ticket sales since the Broadway production of Chicago cast Jinkx Monsoon in the role of Matron “Mama” Morton.
According to the publication, the RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar is bringing in “standing-room-only crowds” to Chicago on a consistent basis. The report read:
“Two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon is bringing in crowds (she calls them ‘drag happy’ crowds) at Broadway’s Chicago, which played to standing room only last week. Monsoon joined the company as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton last month, and the show’s box office has seen a notable uptick with her onstage. The long-running Kander and Ebb revival filled 100.51% of seats at the Ambassador, making it the week’s top performer in terms of capacity percentage. Combined with a respectable $797,240.18 at the box office, it looks like when you’re good to Jinkx, Jinkx is good to Broadway.”
Monsoon was cast in Chicago for a limited run that started on January 16 and will run through March 12 at the Ambassador Theatre in New York City.
The Chicago stage production is known for being queer-inclusive and bringing in stars like Monsoon for limited runs on the show, such as casting Angelica Ross in the role of Roxie Hart last year. With that said, it’s fair to say that Monsoon is exceeding all expectations during her run as ‘Mama’ Morton, which could open even more doors for the Drag Race star on Broadway.
Give Jinkx Monsoon all of her flowers – it’s what she deserves!
