"Given these recent actions, our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center," producer Jeffrey Seller said in a statement reported on Deadline. "Therefore, we have cancelled the third engagement of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center, originally scheduled for March 3-April 26, 2026."
The producers cited the "recent purge by the Trump Administration" of staff and performing arts events at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for a reason to cancel what would have been the third run of Hamilton at the venue.
"Regardless of the political climate, I have always felt at home at The Kennedy Center, and I am grateful for every person who has spent the last 50 years making it a beacon of nonpartisanship and celebration," Seller's statement continued. "But we cannot presently support an institution that has been forced by external forces to betray its mission as a national cultural center that fosters the free expression of art in The United States of America."
Earlier this year, Trump ousted the Biden-appointed Kennedy Center Board members and named himself the new chairman, as noted by The Advocate.
"Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP," Trump said on social media at the time. "The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!"
Trump's takeover of the Kennedy Center also led to the cancelation of a planned tour of Finn (via Deadline), a children's musical produced by the center last year about a young shark who "wants to let out his inner fish."
The Center said the cancellation "was a purely financial decision," but due to the play being about a young gray shark named Finn who lets out his "inner fish" by becoming brightly colored and glittery, many think the play's themes had something to do with its cancellation.
Stars including Andrew Rannells, Andrew Martin, Kelli O'Hara, Lea Salonga, and more, as well as members of the original Kennedy Center cast and the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, D.C., will put on a one-night performance of the show (which will be live-streamed) on March 17.
