“I know about trolls, daddy,” Karter says.
Khary Payton is perhaps best known for his performance as Ezekiel in The Walking Dead, but the actor revealed his most important role in life this week is as an involved and supportive father. Payton took to Twitter and Instagram yesterday to share that his 11-year-old son is transgender, and that he's one proud dad ready to help his son in any way he can.
"Man, there is nothing more beautiful than watching your child feel the joy of exploring what it means to be true to themselves," Payton posted. "This is his journey, and I am here for it.
According to the actor, Karter "has always identified as a boy." Khary goes on to describe his son as "one of the the most happy, well-adjusted individuals I've ever known." You could almost feel Payton beaming with pride.
“This my kid. One of the most happy, well-adjusted individuals I’ve ever known. My son, Karter. Karter with a K because it reminded him of my name. He chose it. You see, he was born female but has always identified as a boy.”— Khary Payton (@Khary Payton) 1592242247
While the child "thought it would be cool" to reveal his gender on social media, the pair know there's a lot of transphobia in the world. Karter was not concerned.
"I can handle trolls," Payton the younger assured his dad according to a tweet.
“He thought it would be cool if I announced it on social media. I told him that there would so many supporters but also a lot of jerks who would be harsh. He said, “Yeah, I know about trolls, daddy. I can handle trolls.” 😅”— Khary Payton (@Khary Payton) 1592242247
The response to Payton's announcement was generally positive. And Karter earned at least one new fan from a galaxy far, far away as actor Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker tweeted his support.

"I hope you all have the opportunity to feel the unquenchable love that I am feeling right now," Khary wrote to Instagram in an associated post. It's simply the latest show of supportive parents of trans and genderqueer children.
