In the wake of a slew of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation from President Donald Trump, singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus, one third of the Grammy Award-winning group Boygenius, is showing her support for the transgender community with a new pledge.
On Monday, Trump was sworn in as president for a second term and effectively declared war on trans people in his inauguration speech. "As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female," he declared.
The same day, Trump signed a series of anti-LGBTQ+ executive orders, including one that declared that the U.S. government would only recognize two sexes (not genders like Trump said in his speech). The order also prohibits federal funds from being used for "transition services," including gender-affirming surgery and hormone therapy.
It's an upsetting development for the transgender and nonbinary folks who are concerned about the future. But Dacus is rallying around the community with action. The singer shared a post on social media Wednesday offering financial assistance to anyone needing funds for gender-affirming care.
"If trans people wanna comment surgery gofundmes, I’m gonna give away 10k in $500 increments until it’s gone, & if other people wanna scroll through and make donations, please do," Dacus wrote.
"The government will never be the source of our validation or protection, we have to do it ourselves."
The comments are full of GoFundMe links from queer and trans folks, as well as comments thanking Dacus for the act.
"Lucy I am CRYING you are an angel. I have felt so helpless in wanting to help but just don’t even know how and I literally am a lawyer who works in this realm and I feel so helpless," reads one reply. "Thank you thank you thank you for helping those we love in any way you can."
Dacus is set to go on tour with MUNA's Katie Gavin and jasmine.4.t this spring.
