"I once fell in love with a Kansas City cutie and must have visited him about 10 times in one year," says Seth Bogart, lead singer of the California trash-punk band Hunx & His Punx. "I thought it was gonna be some kind of country-bumpkin paradise, even though it was referred to as the 'Paris of the Plains.' Little did I know how in love with the city I'd be." On the heels of the release of the band's new record, Street Punk -- a jagged, ratty mix of early-'80s hardcore and '90s grrrl groups -- Bogart tipped us off to some choice offbeat spots in his Missouri home away from home.
PEGGY NOLAND KANSAS CITY
"My favorite store in the world. When I met Peggy, it looked like a cheeseburger. Then it turned into a cloud that sold adult baby clothes, and then, when you thought it couldn't get any better, a space with giant green fingers and a huge bottle spilling out Pepto-pink nail polish all over. Now it's covered in 'Going Out of Business'-esque signs--the ultimate prank, 'cuz it's not going anywhere." 124 W. 18th St.; PeggyNoland.com
SUCOTASH
"All my friends in Kansas City, including my ex, have worked here. I used to hang here a lot when I was waiting for him to get off work." 2601 Holmes St.; SuccotashKC.com
SIDEKICKS SALOON
"A good bet if you want to see hot cowboys frenching on the dance floor, or drag shows that are way better than the ones in California. It's a country-western gay bar, but I guess it's not totally country." 3707 Main St.
TRES BLISS BEAUTY (FORMERLY GLAMOURAMA) AT THE LANDING MALL
"This beauty supply store has the best wigs, plus cute grandma tidbits left over from the '80s." 1240 E. Meyer Blvd.
SIDESTREET BAR AND GRILL
"The closest thing to a leather bar in Kansas City... and it's a 'bar and grill'! There's a dark basement with a motorcycle you can pose on and lots of men doing suspicious, sexy things. A little seedier and somehow cozier than the rest of the gay bars in Kansas City." 413 E. 33rd St.
MIAMI ICE
"A Miami Ice is kind of like a modern snow cone with frozen custard at the bottom. It tastes great drunk or on drugs, or neither. They close during the winter. That's annoying -- I want to eat it every day." 1624 W. 39th St.
LEILA'S HAIR MUSEUM
"The 'only hair museum in the world.' It's run by an amazing woman, Leila, who collected all sorts of hair art during her 20-plus years as a cosmetologist." 1333 S. Noland Rd., Independence, MO.; LeilasHairMuseum.net
