Now that Wang is out, let the game of fashion musical chairs begin.
After days of speculation, it's official: Balenciaga and Alexander Wang terminated their contract, leaving the door open for a new creative force at the Spanish mega-brand. Parent company Kering is rumored to be looking at lesser-known talent to take over the collections. Here, our predictions on who could (or should) be propelled at the helm.
Thomas Tait (Thomas Tait)
Location: London, UK
Why him? He won the inaugural LVMH Prize in 2014 for his colorful take on womenswear. He's young and queer, and could bring a hint of oh-so-now androgyny to Balenciaga. (Pictured: Thomas Tait Spring-Sumer 2015 collection)
Simon Porte (Jacquemus)
Location: Paris, France
Why him? Runner up of LVMH Prize this year, Simon Porte's label Jacquemus is on everyone's lips. A fun, down-to-earth approach to womenswear, paired with solid concepts bathed in French culture might be a winning change for Balenciaga. Plus, he's kind of cute. Prabal Gurung (Prabal Gurung)
Location: New York, USA
Why him? His eponymous label is already a hit with celebrities, and his recent involvement in the Nepal earthquake relief has raised his profile on the global scene. His style is luxurious, inventive, and effortlessly chic -- very Balenciaga. (Pictured: Prabal Gurung Resort 2016)
Christopher Kane (Christopher Kane)
Location: London, UK
Why him? His geometric creations defy conventions of current ready-to-wear, and could herald a return to some Nicolas Ghesquiere-eque fantasy at Balenciaga. At just 33, Kane is also a big player on the menswear scene. Bonus point: His brand is owned by Kering, Balenciaga's parent company, so it should be a shoo-in for the Brit.
