Lea Michele could be walking down the street and Beanie Feldstein wouldn't know a thing. Sorry to this former Glee star.
While Feldstein definitely knows who Michele is, when the new Funny Girl star was asked by Andy Cohen what she made of Michele's name trending when Feldstein was cast in the iconic role of Fanny Brice, she admitted to the host that she had no idea what was going on.
"I didn't know that any of this was happening by the way. And all of a sudden people started explaining it to me, and I was like: wait, what's happening?" Feldstein told Cohen.
"She very sweetly wrote on my Instagram. I don't know the woman whatsoever, but..." she said before Cohen cut in and called the interaction between the two "happy."
When Feldstein was first cast, Michele showed her support for the Impeachment: American Crime Story star by commenting on her Instagram. "Yes! YOU are the greatest star!" Michele wrote. "This is going to be epic!!"
For years, Michele has been the presumptive favorite to be cast in the role should the show get a first-ever Broadway revival. Not only did she perform several of Fanny's classic songs including "People," and "Don't Rain on My Parade" on the Fox series Glee as the character Rachel Berry, but for the first five seasons, her character's main goal in life was to play the role.
Back in 2017, after Ryan Murphy acquired the rights to mount a Broadway revival of the show, Michele was asked if she was still interested on Watch What Happens Live. "I hope so, I really hope so. We were thinking of doing it right after Glee, but I did a lot of the songs from Funny Girl on Glee, so it felt like a little soon," she said at the time. "But I feel really ready to do it now so maybe we could do it soon."
According to People, Michele ultimately turned down the role. Now, the rights have gone to Michael Mayer, who was Michele's director when she starred in Spring Awakening, and he has decided to take the role in a different direction.
Michele isn't the only one who's dreamed of playing Brice for years, though. So has Feldstein. "I went to my third birthday party dressed as [Fanny Brice] so sometimes dreams actually come true," she wrote on her Instagram when her casting was first announced.
